Escapee

An honor student in Texas was jailed for missing too much school.

"But the judge said Tran's case was bigger than the individual situation of one student.

"'If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?,' said Judge Lanny Moriarty. 'Let them go too?'"

Maybe the Texas schools need a work-release program.

David Nicholas forwarded this fascinating article –

-- that makes a broad definition of "autocatalytic set" which elaborates into an explanation for life, the universe, and everything.  It turns out that the chicken crossed the road in order to lay an egg so that another chicken could cross another road.  And so on, to the Apollo Program and beyond.

Because we don't know how to deal with intellectual property
[info]supergee
The TV networks are suing DISH Networks for making it too easy to skip the commercials. They are calling it "copyright infringement," which makes no more sense than calling it "metaphysical sodomy" or "mopery with intent to gawk" but gets fewer cruel snickers.

It appears to be impossible to sell intellectual property.* The only way is to fasten it to something you can sell, like a physical book or disk. Failing that, one attaches it to advertising, which can be sold, but the problem with that is that nobody wants to watch the commercials.

Maybe that's why the Facebook IPO was disappointing: Facebook hasn't figured out how to force us to look at the ads.

fangs for the mammaries . . .
[info]joe_haldeman

We went to see Dark Shadows  last night, and came away unsmitten.  I like Johnny Depp in any role, but this one is so thin and trite he couldn't rescue it.  It's a bunch of vampire clichés rattling around in a shapeless container.  A few good sight gags and groaner lines . . . the teenaged girl asks Barnabas Collins, "Are you stoned, or what?"  He replies, "They tried stoning me once.  It did not work."

and this exchange . . . .

Angelique Bouchard: What if I made you love me?

Barnabas Collins: With what, a spell?

Angelique Bouchard: [strips to her brassiere] With this!

Barnabas Collins: I must admit, they have not aged a day...

That's a high point.  They should put this monster back in the box and bury it.

Henry Morgan once said, "There came the time, as it must in every company, for the man with the money to fire the man with the ideas." It happened on Community, and here is how the other people with the talent are expected to "explain" it.

School rules almost kill asthma sufferer.

Thanx to [info]paft, who points out:
Right. Happens all the time. Parents can be counted on to be furious when people step in help their children in a dire medical situation.

On the other hand, They never, never sue in cases where the child is allowed to die.
